Dave Gibbons will be signing copies of Watchmen (and I guess other things too) at Borders book shops throughout the UK over the next couple of days. The list I;ve got is below, if you know of any other dates please let me know Probably just to support the film but well worth the trip I’m sure…
Borders Islington Dave Gibbons Book Signing 12/03/2009 @ 7:30pm
Borders Glasgow Dave Gibbons Book Signing 14/03/2009 @ 1:30pm
See you in Glasgow on Saturday of you’re coming along.
After what seems like an age its been really difficult to get the times and dates of showings of cinemas in the UK. I’m pleased to see that some of the UK cinemas have just released their show times for the Watchmen movie (only a couple of hours to go until I get to see it) and not a moment too late it would appear.
Below are some links to help you find where you want to go to:
I had to bit the bullet as there were no showing, it would appear, at my local Cineworld. Duly I’m going to Glasgow on Thursday the 5th of March @ Glasgow Renfrew Street cinema - the 11:45 showing. Am made up - drive home will be a bit of a pain but gettign to see the film early - and then I can blog about it when I get home (around 3:30 in the morning. So I should have a delirium filled post up around 4 (I hope)
You can preorder the BlueRay/DVD of Tales of the Black Freighter over at HMV.com; £6.99 for the DVD and £9.99 on BlueRay is a decent discount when the RRP is £9.99 and £14.99.
Alongside the release of the Watchmen Film (only a week to go) Paramount are releasing the an animated version of “Tales of the Black Freighter” on DVD. It also includes the Hollis Mason (the first Nite Owl) tell all story “Under the Hood”.
Both these story lines were core components of the original Watchmen comic book. The tales of the Black Freighter is being read as New York is being destroyed and Under the Hood fills in back story elements of the watchmen story explaining the creation of the minutemen and some other juicy little pieces of Watchmen story lines.
I’ve just received some stills for the Tales of the Black Freighter and some box shots. Will post more shots tomorrow - I promise…
For a long time the Glasgow Science Centre have been advertising that they will be showing the IMAX version of Watchmen. Lo and behold they’re now not showing it. I gave them a call and spoke to a very nice, polite young lady who said they couldn’t reach an agreement with the distruibutor.
I think this translates as they didnt want to pay the requested price for the film. Fair enough but why not do this before listing that you will be showing it.
Since the time of the ancient greek the concept of “Who watches the watchmen?” has been in use. And the concept has never been more needed than just now.
Juvenal is credited with initially using the phrase “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” - literally “who guards the guards themselves”. Ever since the phrase has constantly been re-used to highlight the core moral problem with people placing themselves under the rule or moral authority of another group - as who will morally rule those who watch over the morality of everyone else. In recent terms the movie ‘Frost Vs Nixon’ explored the concept:
David Frost: Are you really saying the President can do something illegal? Richard Nixon: I’m saying that when the President does it, that means it’s *not* illegal!
The morality of those who have to govern is always under question - and always should be. And in many socieities those who govern watch themselves - and the watching is generally lax and pretty awful. Think of Tory MPs paying their sons for imaginary work, MPs claiming 1st and 2nd home allowances, bankers destroying national economies and then wanting bonus payments as a reward for their greed, churches talking about morality whilst priests abuse children, etc, etc.
The point is that today no one is watching the watchmen. Society gives up so much to the elected/unelected leaders in many spheres and has no way to really hold them to account.
I guess what we need is a moral politican but following the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan the chances of this are minimal. Even Obama for all his posturing is likely to fall back to the usual position of protectionism.
